Why do I think that data science is so cool?

It seems like every website connected to the internet talks about how data science is the hottest, sexiest job you can find. Of course, that isn’t true for everyone. But, here’s some reasons why it’s definitely at the top of my list!

I love solving problems

Ultimately, businesses want to use data science to identify and solve problems. It’s cool to learn from data, and to identify patterns and relationships among different variables. But, the real thrill comes from the realization that you’ve unearthed the root of the problem and some potential solutions to it!

Thinking logically comes naturally to me

I’m passionate about thinking logically to understand problems and find solutions. I may not recall all of the many logical fallacies and cognitive biases that can affect our thinking. But, it feels like my brain throws an error when presented an illogical conclusion. Naturally, I want to resolve those issues, and I believe that doing so prevents even more issues down the road.

There are so many different career opportunities within data science

One of the reasons that data science has been at the top of the list of hottest jobs is that there are so many openings for data scientists. But, what makes that exciting to me is that there are so many different data science jobs! The data science process is applicable to so many different business domains, that you could work in almost any field as a data scientist.

Of course, data scientists can choose to specialize, if something really matches their interests. But, they can be exposed to so many different fields, roles, and domains before deciding to specialize. I think that all of those options can only be good for my career path!

Data scientists are like modern-day explorers

Deep down, I am an intensely curious person and love learning new things. Perhaps at some point in the past, I may have been an explorer. While it’s true that there are still places that are under-explored - like the ocean floor or outer space - most of the amazing places on earth are accessible in less than 24 hours of travel.

Today, there are whole worlds composed of data that can be explored by the data scientist. With all of the different computer science tools, statistical, ML, and AI algorithms, and business domains, there are always options to continue exploring. All of these opportunities to learn new stuff should keep this career exciting for a long time to come!
